DOJ's 2014 Stats Show Whistleblower Success Under FCA Benefitting All Taxpayers

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has just released its 2014 False Claims Act Statistics. As a firm that focuses much of our practice on representing whistleblowers, known as Relators, in False Claims Act (FCA) cases, we find that the DOJ's statistics provide interesting insights into the total recoveries secured under the FCA. It also provides data on the areas of false claims yielding the largest recoveries.

  • According to the DOJ's FCA statistics, a total of nearly $3 billion of recoveries were obtained in 2014, with the vast majority of the recoveries occurring from health care related cases totaling $2.2 billion.
  • The statistics data from the DOJ provides an informative history of the increase in qui tam litigation from 1997 (30 cases) to 2014 (713 cases).
  • One key take away from the 2014 DOJ FCA statistics is that the FCA is a powerful tool for combating fraud against the federal government resulting in the return of taxpayers' monies to the federal coffers.
